Dussehra: Victory of Good Over Evil

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, celebrates the victory of good over evil. It marks the end of Navratri and commemorates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, the demon king.

Origins and Mythology

Dussehra is primarily associated with the story of the Ramayana. Lord Rama, with the help of Hanuman and his army, fought against Ravana for ten days and finally defeated him, rescuing his wife Sita from Ravana's captivity. The festival also celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura.

Celebrations

Dussehra celebrations involve burning effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Ramlila, a theatrical performance of the Ramayana, is staged in many parts of India. Processions with decorated idols of deities are also common.
