The Story of Ganesha
Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati. According to legend, Parvati created Ganesha from sandalwood paste to guard her door. Shiva, unaware of this, beheaded Ganesha. Parvati was distraught, and Shiva promised to bring Ganesha back to life by attaching the head of the first creature he found facing north, which happened to be an elephant.
Celebrations and Rituals
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with:
- Idol Installation: A clay idol of Ganesha is installed in homes and public places.
- Puja: Daily prayers and rituals are performed.
- Offerings: Modaks (sweet dumplings) and other delicacies are offered to Ganesha.
- Cultural Programs: Music, dance, and other cultural programs are organized.
- Immersion: On the tenth day, the idol is immersed in water (sea, river, or lake).
