Origins and Mythology

The most popular legend associated with Holi is the story of Prahlad and Holika. Hiranyakashipu, an Asura king, demanded that everyone worship him. However, his son Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. Enraged by his son's devotion, Hiranyakashipu conspired with his sister Holika, who was believed to be immune to fire, to kill Prahlad. Holika sat with Prahlad in a burning pyre, but Prahlad's unwavering devotion to Vishnu protected him, and Holika was burned to ashes. This signifies the victory of good over evil.

Celebrations

Holi celebrations typically span two days. The first day, known as Holika Dahan, involves the burning of a pyre symbolizing the destruction of Holika and evil. The second day, Rangwali Holi, is celebrated with the throwing of colored powders (gulal) and water on each other. People dance to festive music, share sweets, and enjoy special delicacies.
