Onam: Celebrating the Return of King Mahabali

Onam: The Harvest Festival of Kerala

Onam is a major Hindu festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. It is a harvest festival that marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali.

The Legend of Mahabali

King Mahabali was a benevolent Asura (demon) king who ruled over Kerala. His reign was characterized by prosperity and equality. However, the gods became jealous of his popularity and sought Vishnu's help. Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, approached Mahabali and asked for three paces of land. With each pace, Vamana grew larger and larger, covering the earth and the sky. For his third pace, Mahabali offered his own head, sending him to the netherworld (Patala). However, Vishnu granted Mahabali the boon to visit his kingdom once a year, during Onam.

Onam is celebrated with:

  • Pookalam: Elaborate floral carpets are created in front of homes.
