Trataka Meditation

The Practice of Trataka Meditation

Trataka, or candle gazing, is a yogic purification and concentration technique that involves focusing the eyes steadily on a single point, typically a candle flame.

The Process

Place a candle at arm's length, at eye level, in a dimly lit room. Sit comfortably and focus your gaze on the tip of the flame without blinking. Continue gazing until your eyes begin to water or feel strained. Close your eyes and visualize the afterimage of the flame between your eyebrows. Repeat the process for a few minutes each day.

Benefits

Trataka improves concentration, strengthens eyesight, calms the mind, and enhances intuition. It also helps to develop self-awareness and inner peace.

Precautions

  • Individuals with glaucoma or other eye conditions should consult a doctor before practicing Trataka.
  • Avoid straining your eyes. If you experience discomfort, stop the practice and rest.
  • Use a stable candle holder to prevent accidents.

Variations

  • Bindu Trataka: Focusing on a dot or symbol instead of a candle flame.
  • Internal Trataka: Visualizing a point within the body, such as the third eye chakra.

Tips for Effective Practice

  • Maintain a steady and relaxed gaze.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Practice in a quiet and comfortable environment.
  • Be patient and persistent.
