Mohini's Enchantment
The Story of Mohini and the Amrita
During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the gods and demons worked together to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. However, when the Amrita emerged, a fierce battle erupted between the gods and demons for its possession.
To ensure the gods received the Amrita, Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini, a beautiful enchantress. Mohini distracted the demons with her beauty, mesmerizing them and taking the Amrita into her possession.
Mohini then skillfully distributed the Amrita only to the gods. One demon, Rahu, disguised himself as a god and managed to drink a few drops of the Amrita before Mohini could stop him.
As soon as Mohini realized the deception, she severed Rahu's head with her Sudarshan Chakra. However, because Rahu had consumed the Amrita, his head remained immortal and became a planet. His body also became immortal, known as Ketu.
This story highlights Vishnu's ability to restore cosmic balance using his Maya (illusionary power) and the themes of deception, immortality, and divine justice.
