Shabari's Devotion
The Story of Rama and Shabari
During his exile, Rama, along with Lakshmana, wandered through the forests. They reached the hermitage of Shabari, an elderly tribal woman who was a devoted disciple of Sage Matanga. Her guru had instructed her to await Rama's arrival.
For years, Shabari eagerly awaited Rama, meticulously collecting the sweetest berries for him. When Rama arrived, Shabari offered him the berries she had tasted to ensure their sweetness. Though traditionally, offering tasted food is considered impure, Rama accepted them with love and gratitude, recognizing Shabari's devotion.
Shabari then narrated the plight of Sugriva, who was seeking Rama's help to reclaim his kingdom from his brother Vali. She directed Rama to Hanuman, a devotee of Rama, who could help Sugriva.
After Rama met Hanuman, Shabari, having fulfilled her guru's instructions and having had the darshan of Rama, entered into a self-immolation and ascended to heaven. The story highlights Rama's acceptance of devotion regardless of social status, caste, or creed. It also underscores the power of selfless devotion and the fulfillment of a guru's word.
