The Significance of the Ganges River

The Ganges River, or Ganga, is considered the most sacred river in Hinduism. It is revered as a goddess, Ganga Maa, and is believed to have the power to purify sins and grant liberation (moksha).

According to Hindu mythology, Ganga was originally a celestial river. King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring her down to Earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors and grant them salvation. Shiva, in his compassion, broke Ganga's fall with his matted hair to prevent the Earth from being overwhelmed.

Bathing in the Ganges is considered a sacred act, and the river's water is used in many Hindu rituals and ceremonies. The city of Varanasi (Benares), located on the banks of the Ganges, is considered one of the holiest cities in Hinduism, where many Hindus seek to spend their final days and be cremated by the river, ensuring liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
